Improving work of \textit{J. D. Masters} in [Algebr. Geom. Topol. 5, 835--864 (2005; Zbl 1082.57013)], the authors show that the number of conjugacy classes of surface subgroups as well as the number of their commensurability classes inside the fundamental group of a closed hyperbolic \(3\)-manifold grows like \(g^{2g}\), where \(g\) denotes the genus of the surface.
