In this paper the author studies necessary and sufficient conditions under which there exists a continuous selection \(f:\mathcal{F}(X)\to X\), where \(\mathcal{F}(X)\) is the hyperspace of all non-empty closed subsets of \(X\) endowed with either a metric-proximal topology, Hausdorff distance topology or the topology \(\tau_U\). The latter is a hyperspace topology that is finer than the Fell topology, but coarser than any metric-proximal topology. The first major result in this article states that for a zero-dimensional metrizable space, local compactness modulo one point plus separability is equivalent to the strong \(\tau_{\delta}\)-selection property, i.e. there exists a selection that is continuous for each \(\tau_{\delta(d)}\) whenever \(d\) is a compatible metric on \(X\). Similar results are given for the strong \(\tau_H\)-selection property and the \(\tau_U\)-selection property. In the final section the author proves several results connecting total disconnectedness of hyperspaces with local compactness of the underlying space and the existence of continuous selections.
