The main objective of this paper is to carry the concept of lacunary statistical convergence for series, introduced in [\textit{J. A. Fridy} and \textit{C. Orhan}, Pac. J. Math. 160, No. 1, 43--51 (1993; Zbl 0794.60012)] and in [\textit{J. A. Fridy} and \textit{C. Orhan}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 173, No. 2, 497--504 (1993; Zbl 0786.40004)], into the setting of real variable measurable functions defined on \([0,\infty)\) by defining the so-called sliding window method \(S(\alpha,\beta)\). Results comparing ordinary convergence, strong summability and \(S(\alpha,\beta)\) are given. In particular, employing the approach of the foregoing papers, the authors establish criteria for lacunary statistical convergence to imply statistical convergence and conversely.
