This short review of analytical and numerical results published during the last two decades (there are 24 items in the list) has the main goal to analyze the possibility of describing nanotube geometries on a purely variational ground. A number of different continuum and atomistic models like the so-called zigzag and armchair nanotubes is analyzed. Among the considered atomistic models, especially two have drawn the most attention. These are the classical rolled-up model and the Cox-Hill model (known as polyhedral model).
