The work considers a PDE system formulated for an unstirred chemostat, which, as an example, can model the water column of lakes and of oceans. At first, the authors analyse linear cooperative system reproducing the available recourses in a phytoplankton-free environment and prove that the corresponding system admits a unique positive steady-state solution. Further, the phytoplankton dynamics in such chemostat is studied in terms of a non-linear eigenvalue problem.
