Let \(T\) be a nonsingular transformation of the \(\sigma\)-finite measure space \((X,{\mathcal F},m)\). The authors relate in great detail 1. the validity of a strong ergodic theorem for the Frobenius-Perron operator \(P\) of \(T\) to the existence of a finite ergodic decomposition of \(X\) such that each ergodic component carries an \(m\)-absolutely continuous \(T\)-invariant probability measure, and 2. the \(L^ 1\)-convergence of \((P^ n)_{n>0}\) (to a finite- dimensional positive projection) to the existence of a cyclic decomposition for the ergodic components of \(T\) such that \(T^ p\), for some suitable \(p>0\), is exact on each of its finitely many ergodic components. As an application they discuss an abstract framework (due to Gordin) for proving central limit theorems for stochastic processes generated by \((T,m)\).
