The authors define a unital JB-algebra \(A\) to be of rank zero if the set of invertible elements is dense in \(A\) (and extend this to the non-unital case by considering the unitization of \(A\)). The main result states that the following three conditions are equivalent for a unital JB-algebra \(A\): (i) \(A\) is of rank zero, (ii) the set of elements with finite spectrum is dense in \(A\), and (iii) every inner ideal of \(A\) admits an approximate identity (not necessarily increasing) consisting of projections.
