    \textit{J. Bustoz} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 25, 481--487 (1970; Zbl 0194.08803)] characterizes summability matrices that induce the Gibbs phenomenon. In this paper, Bustoz's characterization is extended to four dimensional matrices which define summability methods for double sequences (in the sense of Pringsheim's convergence). Let \(s=\left( s_{mn}\left( z\right) \right)_{\left( m,n\right) \in \mathbb{N}^{2}}\) be a double sequence of functions converging pointwise on \(D\subset \mathbb{C}\) to a function \(f.\) For \(z_{0}\in \overline{D},\) let the core \(K\left( z_{0},s\right) \) of \(s\) be defined by \(K\left( z_{0},s\right) :=\bigcap _{\left( m,n\right) \in \mathbb{N}^{2}}\overline{\text{conv}}G_{m,n}\left( z_{0},s\right) \), where \[ G_{m,n}\left( z_{0},s\right) :=\left\{ s_{kl}\left( z\right) \mid \left(k,l\right) \geq \left( m,n\right) \text{, }z\in D\text{, }\left| z-z_{0}\right| <1/\max \left\{ m,n\right\} \right\} . \] A four dimensional matrix \(A=\left( a_{mnkl}\right) \) that is regular for the bounded double sequences is said to induce the double Gibbs phenomenon in \(s\) if \(K\left( z_{0},s\right) \subseteq K\left(z_{0},f\right) \), but \(K\left( z_{0},As\right) \nsubseteqq K\left(z_{0},f\right) .\) Following Bustoz, the authors present conditions under which \(A\) has this property.
