    The authors present a local structure theorem for all generalized complex (GC) manifolds, which extends Gualtieri's result for the case of regular GC manifolds. Furthermore, they can describe the first-order approximation to the GC structure, which initiates an attempt to extend their main result to a complete classification of the local structure of GC manifolds. Recall that a GC structure on a manifold \(M\) is an \(\mathbb{R}\)-linear \(\left\langle ,\right\rangle \)-preserving bundle automorphism \(\mathcal{J}\) of \(TM\oplus T^{\ast}M\) with \(\mathcal{J}^{2}=-1\) where \(\left\langle \left( X,\xi\right) ,\left( Y,\eta\right) \right\rangle :=\xi\left( Y\right) +\eta\left( X\right) \) defines the standard symmetric bilinear pairing on \(TM\oplus T^{\ast}M\). As fundamental examples, any complex manifold \(M\) has the GC structure \(\mathcal{J=} Je_{11}-J^{\ast}e_{22}\) (with respect to the direct sum decomposition \(TM\oplus T^{\ast}M\)) where \(J\) is its integrable almost complex structure and \(e_{ij}\)'s are the matrix elements, and any symplectic manifold has the GC structure \(\mathcal{J=}\omega e_{21}-\omega^{-1}e_{12}\) where \(\omega\) is its symplectic form. If \(B\) is a real closed 2-form on a GC manifold \(\left( M,\mathcal{J}\right) \), then \(\exp\left( B\right) \mathcal{J}\exp\left( -B\right) \) defines another GC structure on \(M\), called the \(B\)-field transform of \(\mathcal{J}\), where \(\exp\left( B\right) :=e_{11}+e_{22}+Be_{21}\) with \(B\) viewed as a map \(TM\rightarrow T^{\ast}M\). It is pointed out that a GC structure is of the form \(\mathcal{J}=Je_{11}-J^{\ast}e_{22}+\sigma e_{21}+\pi e_{12}\), where \(\pi =-\pi^{\ast}\) viewed as a section of \(\wedge^{2}TM\) defines a Poisson structure on \(M\) whose canonical symplectic foliation coincides with a distinguished known symplectic distribution associated with the GC structure \(\mathcal{J}\). Then the authors prove the main theorem stating that at any point \(m_{0}\in M\), a GC manifold \(M\) can be locally decomposed into a direct product \(S\times N\) of a symplectic manifold \(S\) and a GC manifold \(N\) with its Poisson tensor \(\pi_{N}\) vanishing at a point \(n_{0}\in N\) where \(m_{0}\equiv\left( s_{0},n_{0}\right) \in S\times N\), such that the product GC structure on \(S\times N\) is the \(B\)-field transform of the local GC structure on \(M\) for some local real closed 2-form \(B\) on \(M\). Finally, for a GC manifold \(M\) with its associated Poisson tensor \(\pi\) vanishing at a point \(m\in M\), they show that the first-order approximation to the GC structure is locally at \(m\) encoded in the data of a constant \(B\)-field and a complex Lie algebra.
