A subgroup \(H\) of \(\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})\) is said to be elementary if \(\text{tr\,}fgf^{-1}g^{-1}= 2\) for any two elements \(f,g\in H\) of infinite order. It is well known that a non-elementary subgroup \(G\) of \(\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})\) is discrete if and only if each two-generator subgroup of \(G\) is discrete. Here we have an interesting extension. \(G\) is discrete if and only if for a fixed non-trivial element \(f\) of \(G\) and each element \(g\in G\) the subgroup generated by \(f\) and \(gfg^{-1}\) is discrete.
