The book presents a detailed theory of modern high-power turbomachinery. Fundamentals of this theory are given in Chapters 1--4. An approximate evaluation of flexural eigenfrequencies of rotors is the topic of Chapter 1. Here, the Dunkerley's rule is used for the determination of the lowest eigenfrequency of a lumped-mass multi-degree-of-freedom elastic shaft. The authors also give an extension of this rule to higher modes. The effects of variable elasticity in rotating machinery are considered in Chapter 2. Analytical tools are given for differential equations with periodic coefficients governing the systems with variable elasticity. The mathematical models of rotor dynamics are described in Chapter 3. They are the one disc-flexible rotor model, called Jeffcott or de Laval rotor, and a discrete finite element model. Chapter 4 deals with flow-induced vibrations of rotors, and, in particular, with an important case known as `steam whirl', often appearing in large steam turbines. Chapters 5--8 present the thermal effects in rotating shafts and the dynamics of cracked shafts. Chapter 5 deals with heat-flow-induced vibrations of rotating shafts, resulting from frictional heating in the places of contact between stationary and rotating parts (the `Newkirk effect'). In Chapter 6, the methods of fracture mechanics are applied to the dynamics of cracked rotors. Analytical solutions are obtained in order to study the crack propagation or to identify cracks in service. Further, in Chapter 7 the authors examine the identification of cracks from the resulting change in the dynamic behavior of the system. Chapter 8 describes the temperature generated in the shaft and its surface due to torsional vibrations and material damping, and for plastic deformation due to plastic flow. Chapters 9 and 10, added in the 2nd edition, deal with variational applications in prismatic bars and rods and turbine rotors, respectively. In Chapter 9, the authors study the governing dynamical equations for cracked Euler-Bernoulli beams in flexural vibration. Chapter 10 applies the Hu-Washizu variational formulation to derive the differential equations and boundary conditions for a cracked rod. The book focuses on modern problems of high-power turbomachinery, and does not treat the well-known classical problems. | |||
