An isometrically immersed submanifold \(x : M^n \to \mathbb R^{n+k}\) is said to be of finite type if \(x\) can be decomposed into a finite sum of non-constant smooth maps \(x_i : M^n \to \mathbb R^{n+k}\) that are eigenvectors of the Laplace operator defined on \(M^n\). The authors generalise this notion by replacing the Laplace operator by the second-order linear differential operator \(L_r =\mathrm{Trace}(P_r \circ\mathrm{Hess})\), where \(r \geqslant 1\) is a given number, and \(P_r\) stands for the \(r\)-th Newton transformation associated to the second fundamental form of a hypersurface. The authors completely classify all quadric hypersurfaces of \(L_r\)-finite type. Such a classification is done similarly to the classification of quadric hypersurfaces of finite type due to \textit{B.-Y. Chen} et al. [Colloq. Math. 63, No. 2, 145--152 (1992; Zbl 0765.53043)]. | |||
