General anomaly cancellation formulas (ACF) are obtained here by combining family index theory and the modular invariance of characteristic forms. For \((4k+2)\)-dimensional manifolds, the gravitational ACF generalize [\textit{L. Alvarez-Gaumé} and \textit{E. Witten}, ``Gravitational anomalies'', Nuclear Physics. B 234, No. 2, 269--330 (1984; \url{doi:10.1016/0550-3213(84)90066-X})]. The present paper also derives ACF for the curvatures of the index gerbes of family odd signature operators and family tangent twisted Dirac operators on \((4k+1)\)-dimensional manifolds. In dimension \(4k+3\), some results for the reduced \(\eta\)-invariants of family odd signature operators and family tangent twisted Dirac operators are obtained, with applications in spectral geometry.
