Let \(B(\mathcal{H})\) be a set of all bounded linear operators on a complex Hilbert space \(\mathcal{H}\). The famous Heinz inequality says that \(\|PX+XQ\|\geq \| P^{\alpha}XQ^{1-\alpha}+P^{1-\alpha}XQ^{\alpha}\| \) for all \(\alpha\in [0,1]\), \(X\in B(\mathcal{H})\) and positive operators \(P,Q\in B(\mathcal{H})\), where \(\|\cdot \|\) means the operator norm. It is equivalent to the well-known Corach-Porta-Recht inequality: \(\|SXS^{-1}+S^{-1}XS\|\geq 2\|X\|\) for \(X\in B(\mathcal{H})\) and invertible self-adjoint operators \(S\in B(\mathcal{H})\). \textit{X. Zhan} has obtained an extension of these inequalities for any unitarily invariant norm [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 20, No. 2, 466--470 (1998; Zbl 0921.15011)], but Zhan's result is restricted on the condition of \(\dim \mathcal{H}<+\infty\). Then \textit{F. Kittaneh} has obtained a further generalization of Zhan's result [Integral Equations Oper. Theory 68, No. 4, 519--527 (2010; Zbl 1230.47026)]. In this paper, the authors obtain a further refinement of these results which does not require any restriction on \(\dim \mathcal{H}\). Next, the authors discuss characterizations of the set of operators satisfying the norm inequality shown in this paper.
