The author defines the \textit{hierarchical zonotopal power ideal}, a generalization of the zonotopal ideal; see \textit{O. Holtz} and \textit{A. Ron} [Ad.v Math. 227, 847--894 (2011; Zbl 1223.13010)] for more information thereon. The ideal depends not only on the chosen set of vectors, but also an upper set in the lattice of flats of the associated matroid. The main result of the paper is that the \(P\)-space associated to a sequence of vectors and chosen upper set is the kernel of the hierarchical zonotopal power ideal. This implies that the Hilbert series depends only on the matroid of the vectors, and not on the representation of the vectors. Moreover, explicit formulae for the Hilbert series are given, both recursively in terms of deletion and contraction of the matroid and combinatorially. The paper closes with a section of examples that help the reader follow some of the more detailed equations. | |||
