This paper studies smooth toroidal compactifications of nonuniform quotients of the ball in \(\mathbb{C}^2\). The first result of the paper is that there exists a cover of any such quotient, whose compactification has ample canonical bundle, admits Riemannian metrics with nonpositive sectional curvature, but has no Kähler metrics with nonpositive sectional curvature. The second result of the paper is that every minimal smooth toroidal compactifications of a finite-volume quotient of the ball in \(\mathbb{C}^2\) is projective algebraic. This result has also been proved in all dimensions by \textit{N. M. Mok} [Progress in Mathematics 296, 331--354 (2012; Zbl 1253.32006)].
