The orbifold Chen-Ruan cohomology was introduced in [\textit{W. Chen} and \textit{Y. Ruan}, Commun. Math. Phys. 248, No. 1, 1--31 (2004; Zbl 1063.53091)] in the analytic category, and by Abramovich-Graber-Vistoli [\textit{D. Abramovich} et al., Am. J. Math. 130, No. 5, 1337--1398 (2008; Zbl 1193.14070)] in the algebraic category. For an orbifold \(X\), the Chen-Ruan cohomology as a vector space is the cohomology of the inertia stack \(I(X)\) of \(X\). Loosely speaking, the inertia stack \(I(X)\) is the disjoint union, for \(g\) in the stabilizer of some point \(x\) of \(X\), of the locus stabilized by \(g\) in \(X\). For example, \(X\) itself appears as a connected component of \(I(X)\), as the locus fixed by the identity automorphisms. All the other connected components of \(I(X)\) are usually called twisted sectors. Assuming knowledge of the cohomology of \(X\), to describe the Chen-Ruan cohomology it suffices to understand the cohomology of twisted sectors of \(X\). In the paper under review, the author studies the Chen-Ruan cohomology for the moduli stack \(\mathcal{M}_{1,n}\) of smooth genus one curves with \(n\) ordered marked points and for the Deligne-Mumford compactification \(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,n}\). The main results are a complete stack-theoretic description of their twisted sectors as well as an explicit computation of the Chen-Ruan cohomology cup product (Theorems 1.1 and 1.2). As a consequence, the author proposes an orbifold tautological ring in genus \(1\) (Definition 7.7). In subsequent work [\textit{N. Pagani}, Adv. Math. 229, No. 3, 1643--1687 (2012; Zbl 1236.14032); \textit{N. Pagani} and \textit{O. Tommasi}, Manuscr. Math. 142, No. 3--4, 409--437 (2013; Zbl 1314.14051); \textit{N. Pagani}, Int. Math. Res. Not. 2012, No. 10, 2163--2178 (2012; Zbl 1259.14029)], similar studies were carried out in genus \(2\), \(3\) and for the moduli of hyperelliptic curves.
