A diffeomorphism \(f: M\to M\) on a closed manifold \(M\) is considered. Results on the (co-) homology discrete Conley index of a basic set \(\Omega\) are given under the assumption that the chain recurrent set of \(f\) is hyperbolic. It is proved that if \(\Omega\) is zero-dimensional then the Conley index automorphism is conjugated to the nilpotent part of the structure matrix of \(\Omega\). In that case a detailed description of conjugacy to the Jordan form of the matrix is given. If all basic sets are zero-dimensional, a theorem on the form of a connection matrix pair for the corresponding Morse decomposition is provided. Moreover, some general facts about the homology zeta function and connection matrices are also given. Several examples illustrate the main results of the paper.
