The following initial value problem for a class of semilinear neutral functional differential equations of the form \[ \begin{aligned} \tfrac{d}{dt}[x(t)+g(t,x_t)]&=Ax(t)+f(t,x_t), \,\, t\in J=[0,a], \\ x_0&=0, \end{aligned} \] is considered, where \(A: D(A)\subset X\to X\) is an almost sectorial operator, \((X,\|\cdot\|)\) is a Banach space, \({\mathcal B}\) is the phase space, \(\Omega\subset {\mathcal B}\) is open and \(g, f: [0,a]\times \Omega\) are suitable functions. By using the theory of semigroups of growth \(\alpha,\) the existence of mild solutions is discussed for the cases \({\mathcal B}=C([-r,0],X)\) and \({\mathcal B}=L^p([-r,0],X)\). A concrete application to partial neutral functional differential equations is also presented.
