The main result of this paper asserts that free orthogonal quantum groups have a \(\gamma\)-element and that \(\gamma=1\). This is an analogue of the Baum-Connes conjecture which asserts that a certain assembly map for the \(K\)-theory of the reduced cross product of certain locally compact group and a separable algebra is an isomorphism. As a consequence of the main result it is shown that free orthogonal quantum groups are \(K\)-amenable. The author explicitly computes the \(K\)-theories of these quantum groups and in the unimodular case it follows that the corresponding reduced \(C^*\)-algebras do not have any nontrivial idempotents. The arguments use results on triangulated categories, the theory of monoidal equivalences for quantum groups and the equivarinat Kasparov theory for the standard Podleś sphere.
