Let u be an inner function in \(H^{\infty}\) and let \(H^{\infty}[\bar u]\) denote the Douglas algebra generated by \(H^{\infty}\) and the complex conjugate of u. Marshall could prove that there exists a single interpolating Blaschke product such that \(H^{\infty}[\bar u]=H^{\infty}[\bar b]\). In her thesis, P. Gorkin showed that not every Douglas algebra contained in \(H^{\infty}[\bar u]\) is of this form. In the paper under review the author now establishes topological conditions under which such Douglas algebras are again generated by a single interpolating Blaschke product. The rôle which play in this context thin (or sparse) Blaschke products is clearly developed. The author also gives a characterization of the invertible inner functions in a Douglas algebra of the form \(H^{\infty}[\bar u]\). A more general result of this type has been obtained independently by \textit{H. Hedenmalm} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 99, 489-495 (1987; Zbl 0617.46059)]. Readers which are interested in a geometrical characterization (in terms of extreme points) of Douglas algebras of the form \(H^{\infty}[\bar u]\) are referred to \textit{K. Izuchi} [ibid. 97, 410-412 (1986; Zbl 0577.46056)].
