This paper describes the design of a sponge layer and how its response characteristics can be calculated. The technique is applied to a two- layer finite element model of coastal circulation generated by wind forcing, in order to illustrate the results that can be obtained with it.

This paper describes the design of a sponge layer and how its response characteristics can be calculated. The technique is applied to a two- layer finite element model of coastal circulation generated by wind forcing, in order to illustrate the results that can be obtained with it.
