Let \(X\) be a complex projective manifold that is a general complete intersection in \(\mathbb P^N\). A well-known conjecture by Debarre claims that if \(\dim X \leq \mathrm{codim}_{\mathbb P^N} X\) and \(X\) is cut out by equations of sufficiently high degree, then the cotangent bundle \(\Omega_X\) is ample. In particular for \(m \gg 0\) the symmetric power \(S^m \Omega_X\) should have many global sections. The goal of this paper is to advance towards Debarre's conjecture by giving a description of the cohomology of \(S^l \Omega_X\) as subspaces of the vector spaces \(H^N(\mathbb P^N, S^m \tilde \Omega_{\mathbb P^N}(d))\), the description depending explicitly on the equations defining the submanifold \(X\). As a first consequence of this technical statement the author produces families of projective manifolds \(X_t\) such that for every \(m \geq 2\) the dimension of the space of symmetric differentials \(h^0(X_t, S^m \Omega_{X_t})\) is not constant in the family. This improves an example given by \textit{F. Bogomolov} and \textit{B. De Oliveira} [Geom. Funct. Anal. 18, No. 3, 637--656 (2008; Zbl 1170.14014)]. The main statement of the paper is that Debarre's conjecture holds for general complete intersections \(X \subset \mathbb P^N\) such that \(3 \dim X-2 \leq \mathrm{codim}_{\mathbb P^N} X\) which are cut out by equations of degree at least \(2N+3\). It is hard to overestimate the importance of this paper: developing further the approach of the author and \textit{L. Darondeau} [``Complete intersection varieties with ample cotangent bundles'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1511.04709}] and independently \textit{S.-Y. Xie} [``On the ampleness of the cotangent bundles of complete intersections'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:1510.06323}] have recently proven results under the optimal assumption that \(\dim X \leq \mathrm{codim}_{\mathbb P^N} X\).
