The main result of the paper states that, for any unitary operator \(U:H \rightarrow H\) (where \(H\) is a Hilbert space) having a nontrivial continuous singular part, there exists a unitary operator \(V:H \rightarrow H\) such that \(\mathrm{rank} (V-U) = 2\) and the Abel means of the sequence \((U^nV^{-n})_{n\geq 0}\) fail to have a limit in the weak operator topology. In addition, the author addresses the closely related problem of constructing the Hilbert transform with respect to a singular measure on the unit circle.
