A Banach space \(X\) has the weak fixed point property if, for every weakly compact convex subset \(C\) of \(X\), every nonexpansive self-mapping of \(C\) has a fixed point. Frequently, spaces are shown to have the weak fixed point property by proving that they satisfy some geometric property that is known to imply the weak fixed point property. In the article under review, the authors prove that the \(\ell_1\)-sum of a Banach space introduced by \textit{D. van Dulst} in [Nonlinear analysis and applications, Proc. int. Conf., St. John's/ Newfoundland 1981, Lect. Notes Pure Appl. Math. 80, 155--162 (1982; Zbl 0496.46011)] with itself has the weak fixed point property even though the space fails to satisfy the usual geometric conditions that are known to imply the weak fixed point property and even though it is not known if the \(\ell_1\)-sum of two Banach spaces preserves the weak fixed point property.
