Considering a bilinear interaction between two linear dispersive waves governed by the system (in \(d=2\) or \(3\) dimensions) \[ i\partial _t v+b(D)v=0, \quad v(t=0)=f \] \[ i\partial _t u+a(D)u=T_m(v,w), \quad v(t=0)=0 \] \[ i\partial _t w+c(D)w=0, \quad w(t=0)=g \] where \(u,v\) and \(w\) are complex valued functions of \((t,x)\in \mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{R}^d, T_m\) is the pseudo-product operator with symbol \(m\in C^{\infty}_0\) determined by the formula \(T_m(f,g)(x)=\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}e^{ix\xi}m(\xi,\eta)\widehat{f}(\eta)\widehat{g}(\xi-\eta)d\eta d\xi\) (having the effect of restriction to bounded frequencies) and \(a(D),b(D), c(D)\) are the Fourier multipliers with smooth symbols \(a(\xi),b(\xi)\) and \(c(\xi)\) respectively, which are real and having non-degenerate Hessians \([a](\xi), [b](\xi)\) and \([c](\xi)\) for any \(\xi\), the authors state and solve the following questions: what are the decay properties of \(u\)? How do they depend on the localization of \(f\) and \(g\)? How do they depend on the resonant structure of the problem? The obtain results are applied to water waves in a layer of infinite depth at the presence of gravity and surface tension.
