Lässt man \textit{Röntgen}-Strahlen durch Folien verschidener Dicke \(x\) hindurchgehen und ist der Absorptionskoeffizient \(\mu = \mu (\lambda )\), so gilt zwischen der gesuchten Primärintensität \(f(\lambda )\) und der gemessenen Totalintensität \(I(x)\) der durchgelassenen Strahlung: \[ \int _a^b e^{-\mu (\lambda )x} f(\lambda ) d\lambda = I(x)\qquad \left (a=\frac {hc}{eV}, b\simeq 1, 3 \AA \right ). \] Die Aufspaltung des Integrals in eine Summe liefert die praktisch genügende Nährungslösung.
