The author presents necessary and sufficient conditions for the permanence of discrete systems in the plane, based on an index of fixed points on convex sets plus a result on the dynamics of a diffeomorphism around a partially hyperbolic fixed point. He shows, by a concrete example, how permanence can be decided by looking at two curves which can be drawn with a computer.
