The study of soliton equations with self-consistent sources (SESCS) has been done in several ways such as inverse scattering transform, Darboux transform, Hirota's method to name a few. By a procedure called source generation, one can construct many examples of SESCSs and all of them fit into one of the following two types. The first type is characterized by the property that their explicit solution contains arbitrary functions of the temporal variable and the second type is characterized by the property that their explicit solution contains arbitrary functions of the spatial variable. A natural question addressed by the authors is whether there exist some other types of SESCSs. They produce in the present paper a new type, called hybrid type of SESCS, which is a combination of the first two types mentioned earlier, and whose explicit solution contains arbitrary functions of a linear combination of two independent variables. Moreover, they focus on constructing the hybrid type of KPESCS (KP equation with self-consistent sources), respectively, the hybrid type of the two-dimensional Toda lattice equation with self-consistent sources (TosaESCS).
