The validity of the no-slip boundary conditions for Newtonian fluids is a classical problem that has come to question again by recent microfluid research. The authors study the problem of effective boundary conditions at a rough surface and derive error estimates for a no-slip condition in terms of the roughness properties. Moreover, more accurate boundary conditions of Navier type are provided. The work extends that of \textit{A. Basson} and the last author [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 61, No. 7, 941--987 (2008; Zbl 1179.35207)] and the last author and \textit{N. Masmoudi} [Commun. Math. Phys. 295, No. 1, 99--137 (2010; Zbl 1193.35130)].
