Examples of applications of information measures outside communication theory are given (games, experiments, economics, etc.). A case is made against generalization of information measures and characterizations for generalization's sake - then a generalization is presented for the sake of acknowledging the possibility of information measures depending not just upon the probabilities, but also upon the events themselves or upon other parameters of the events too (the ''inset'' measures of information [see e.g. the author and \textit{Z. Daróczy}, RAIRO Inf. Théor. 12, 149- 155 (1978; Zbl 0382.94012); the author and \textit{Pl. Kannappan}, Inf. Control 39, 315-322 (1978; Zbl 0393.94011); the author, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 75, 447-453 (1980; Zbl 0442.94004); Publ. Elektroteh. Fak., Univ. Beogr., Ser. Mat. Fiz. 602-633, 65-72 (1978; Zbl 0442.94005)]). This paper grew out of an invited talk presented at an Atlanta information theory meeting. A previous version has appeared recently in the proceedings of that meeting in Inf. Process. Manage. 20, 383-395 (1984; Zbl 0546.94004).
