The PDE approach to weak KAM theory focusses upon two fundamental equations, namely a Hamilton-Jacobi type equation (1) for a potential and a coupled transport (or continuity) equation (2) for a measure, which is the adjoint of the linearization of (1). The singular variational problem, introduced by the same author in [Calc. Var. Partial Differ. Equ. 17, 159--177 (2003; Zbl 1032.37048)] is revisited and reinterpreted in order to deduce from the estimates found there a sort of \textit{approximate integrability} assertion for certain trajectories of the Hamiltonian system associated to (1) and (2). An important remark is that the recent mean field game theoretical methods of \textit{J.-M. Lasry} and \textit{P.-L. Lions} [Jpn. J. Math. (3) 2, No. 1, 229--260 (2007; Zbl 1156.91321)] yield in the deterministic case a strongly coupled pair of equations generalizing (1) and (2); therefore some very interesting estimates are obtained.
