The main result: Banach spaces containing asymptotically isometric copies of \(\ell^\infty\) must contain isometric copies of \(\ell^\infty\). To obtain this result the author proves the following refinement of a result of \textit{J. R. Partington} [Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 13, 162-166 (1981; Zbl 0457.46010)]: Let \(\|{\cdot}\|\) be an equivalent norm on~\(\ell^\infty\) and let \((\varepsilon_n)\downarrow 0\), \(\varepsilon_n\in (0,1)\). Then there is a sequence \((u_n)\) of disjoint vectors such that for each bounded sequence of scalars \((a_n)\) and for every \(n\geq 1\), \((1-\varepsilon_n)\sup_{i\geq n}|a_i|\leq \|\sum^\infty_{i=n}a_iu_i\|\leq (1+\varepsilon_n)\sup_{i\geq n}|a_i|\) (which was proved by Partington for \(n=1\)).
