The author develops a computational method for explicitly writing irreducible finite-dimensional representations of split semisimple Lie algebras of characteristic zero. Let \(L\) be such an algebra, and let \(\lambda\) be a highest weight vector of a finite-dimensional representation. The idea behind the construction begins with the Verma module \(A(\lambda)=U(L)/J(\lambda)\) where \(U(L)\) is the universal enveloping algebra and \(J(\lambda)\) is an appropriate \(L\)-submodule of \(U(L)\). The module in question is realized as \(A(\lambda)/I(\lambda)\) for a certain left ideal \(I(\lambda)\) of \(A(\lambda)\). Calculations are made possible by finding a Gröbner basis of \(I(\lambda)\). It is shown that the algorithm runs in polynomial time for a fixed Lie algebra.
