The paper under review establishes a local smoothing estimate near the spatial origin for radial solutions to the free Schrödinger equation \( i u_t + \Delta u = 0.\) Specifically, if the initial data \(u(0,x)\) is in \(L^2\), then the author shows that the solution \(u\) contains \(s\) derivatives in the global weighted \(L^2\) space \(L^2_{t,x}(| x| ^{-\alpha} dx)\) whenever \(1 < \alpha < n\), \(n \geq 2\), and \(\alpha = 2(1-s)\). As a consequence of this and a radial Sobolev embedding theorem, the author obtains the endpoint Strichartz estimates of Keel-Tao in the radial case. The author also shows similar bounds for the inhomogeneous Schrödinger equation. The main tools used are the Fourier transform, a change to polar co-ordinates, and a variant of the Sobolev trace lemma for spheres.
