The authors introduce and study a new class of closed symplectic Kähler manifolds \((M,\Omega)\) together with a complex hypersurface \(\Sigma \subset M\) that represents the Poincaré dual to \(k[\Omega]\) \((k>0)\) and such that the complement \((M-\Sigma, \Omega)\) is a subcritical Stein manifold, i.e. endowed with the subcritical polarization. By the desingularization theorem the authors construct examples of subcritical polarizations and explain properties of them. Then they get the results on decompositions of polarized manifolds and Lagrangian embeddings. They show that if \((X^{2m}, \omega_X)\) is either Stein or a closed symplectic manifold with \(\pi_2(X)=0\), then for \(n\geq m=\dim_\mathbb{C} X\), the space \((\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^n\times X^{2m},\sigma \oplus\omega_X)\) admits no simply connected closed Lagrangian submanifold. They prove the uniform bounds on the Gromov radius of subcritical manifolds and discuss the symplectic packing and capacities related to subcritical manifolds. It is shown that if the degree of subcritical polarization is \(k\) and \(\dim_RM\leq 6\) or \(c_1^M= \lambda [\Omega]\) on \(\pi_2(M)\) with \(\lambda> 2k\), then the Gromov radius \(\rho_G(M, \Omega)\leq 1/k\).
