This paper is devoted to the dynamical properties of piecewise uniformly expanding \(C^r\) maps of the plane. The author shows that, in contrast to the one-dimensional case, piecewise uniformly expanding \(C^r\) maps of the plane may: (a) either have no absolutely continuous probability measures and be such that every point is statistically attracted to a fixed repelling point, (b) or have infinitely many ergodic absolutely continuous probability measures. For previous results, see the author [Ergodic Theory Dyn. Syst. 20, 697-708 (2000; Zbl 0973.37003)] and \textit{M. Tsujii} [ibid. 20, 1851-1857 (2000; Zbl 0992.37018)].
