In these two papers, the shorter being a draft of the longer, the author considers representations of integers \(n\) in the form \(n = x^ 3_ 1 + x^ 3_ 2 + x^ 3_ 3 + y^ 5\). If \(E(N)\) denotes the number of \(n\leq N\) which can not be written in this form then it is shown that \(E(N) \ll N^{1-\theta}\) for any \(\theta < 19/2163\). The proof depends on Vaughan's recent refinements in the theory of Waring's problem. It appears to this reviewer that in particular the potential of the new iterative method is not fully exploited. At that, small further progress should be possible.
