Various non-spectral methods for analysis of one-parameter Markov semigroups have been developed over the past two decades (see, for example, the excellent monograph of \textit{A.\,Lasota} and \textit{M.\,C.\thinspace Mackey} [``Chaos, fractals, and noise: Stochastic aspects of dynamics'' (Applied Mathematical Sciences~97, Springer--Verlag, New York) (\({}^2\)1994; Zbl 0784.58005)]). The main feature of non-spectral analysis, in comparison with the classical spectral approach, is that it does not involve any investigation of an infinitesimal generator, and therefore is equally suitable in both discrete and continuous-parameter cases. Recently, many results on asymptotic behavior of Markov semigroups, obtained by these techniques, have been extended to positive semigroups acting in Banach lattices with order continuous norm and in non-commutative \(L^1\)-spaces. The book under review is devoted to the non-spectral analysis of the asymptotic behavior of one-parameter operator semigroups in Banach spaces. The author presents in a systematic way a wealth of relatively unknown but useful results, the majority of which were previously accessible only via the original publications. It is advantageous that all this material has now been organized into a single book, which displays only a small overlap with already existing books. The book has three chapters. Sections 1.1 and 1.2 of the first chapter contain the standard background on operator semigroups. In Section~1.3, the author treats the class of one-parameter constrictive semigroups, which can be asymptotically investigated by methods of linear algebra. Chapter~II presents general non-spectral methods for the asymptotic analysis of positive semigroups in ordered Banach spaces. These methods allow one to extend results on positive operator semigroups in Banach lattices to positive semigroups in non-commutative \(L^1\)-spaces. In Chapter~III, using tools developed in the second chapter, the author discusses one-parameter Markov semigroups in classical and non-commutative \(L^1\)-spaces. The present book is intended for graduate students and researchers working in operator theory, especially on topics related to \(C_0\)-semigroups, mean ergodic theory, and dynamical systems. It will provide useful guidance to those who are new to research on the asymptotic analysis of operator semigroups.
