The authors discuss a finite difference scheme with three time levels for a reaction-diffusion equation, in which the reaction term is a sum of concave and convex components. The diffusion terms are approximated with Crank-Nicolson differences at the first and third time levels, and the reaction term is evaluated at the intermediate level. An energy argument is used to prove stability of the method.
