This article is concerned with the theory of \(J\)-Hermitian subspaces of a complex product Hilbert space \(X\). Here, \(J\) is a conjugate operator on \(X\), that is, an involution switching the inner product \(\langle Jx, Jy\rangle=\langle y, x\rangle\). A \(J\)-Hermitian subspace of \(X^2\) is a subspace that is contained in its \(J\)-adjoint subspace. After defining the defect index for a \(J\)-Hermitian subspace, the authors prove a formula for it. The final section contains a result about existence and characterization of \(J\)-self-adjoint subspace extensions of \(J\)-Hermitian subspaces.
