This article is a detailed survey, with some new results, on the distribution of the Chern numbers of smooth projective surfaces \((c^ 2_ 1\) and \(c_ 2)\) and three-folds \((c^ 3_ 1,c_ 1c_ 2,c_ 3)\) of general type. The first part of this article gives a complete description of all the constructions utilized to fill in the region described by the inequalities which the Chern numbers of a minimal general surface are known to satisfy. The second part begins with study of the analogous problem for three- folds, which are assumed either to be minimal or to have ample K. The strategy is to study the area in \(P^ 2({\mathbb{Q}})\) filled out by the \((c^ 3_ 1:c_ 1c_ 2:c_ 3)\). For instance, the author produces explicit triangles in \(P^ 2({\mathbb{Q}})\) all of whose points do come from projective three-folds of general type. The article concludes with a list of specific open questions.
