The authors consider classes of wave equations with variable wave speeds. By a theorem and a definition of \textit{A. H. Kara} and \textit{F. M. Mahomed} [Int. J. Theor. Phys. 39, No. 1, 23-40 (2000; Zbl 0962.35009)] nonlocal conservation laws from nonlocal symmetries are constructed. These nonlocal symmetries are potential ones which are a subclass of nonlocal symmetries. Moreover, these are Lie-Bäcklund symmetry generators of the equivalent system of first-order equations. The authors construct a class of conservation laws for wave equations with exponential linear and polynomial speed term.
