The authors analyze the effects of vibrations on comfort and road holding capability of road vehicles under the variation of different parameters such as suspension coefficients, road disturbances and seat position. An objective function that takes into account different performance criteria is developed. By using this objective function and a numerical optimization algorithm, the authors accomplish the optimization of suspension parameters. The results obtained from three-dimensional vehicle simulations demonstrate that the use of active and semi-active suspension models for road vehicles proves to be beneficial for comfort without compromising the road holding capability.
