The authors consider mappings \(f\) of a domain \(\Omega\) in \(\mathbb{R}^n\) into \(\mathbb{R}^n\) belonging to the Sobolev space \(W^{1,1}_{\text{loc}}(\Omega, \mathbb{R}^n)\), \(n\geq 2\). For almost all \(x\in\Omega\) there exists the linear transformation \(D: f(x): \mathbb{R}^n\to \mathbb{R}^n\), called differential of \(f\) at \(x\), with norm defined by \(Df(x)= \text{l.u.b}|Df(x)h|\), \(h\in S^{n-1}\). The Jacobian determinant of its matrix is denoted by \(J(x,f)\). They define such \(f\) to be of finite distortion if there exists a measurable function \(K(x)> 1\) finite almost everywhere with \[ |Df(x)|^n\leq K(x) J(x,f)\quad\text{a.e.}. \] For a continuous function \(u\) to be monotone in a domain \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n\) means that \[ \text{osc}(u,B)\leq \text{osc}(u,\partial B) \] for every ball \(B\subset\Omega\). The authors consider also a definition of weak monotonicity due to Manfredi. They treat mappings of finite distortion in Orlicz-Sobolev spaces and so-called grand Orlicz spaces. They give a variety of results on conditions for continuity, modulus of continuity and for weak monotonicity.
