An \(N\)-complex, introduced by Kasparov, is a sequence of modules with a sequence of `differentials' \(d\) between them which satisfy \(d^N=0\) rather than \(d^2=0\). To any simplicial module \(C\) and any \(N\)th root of unity \(q\), one can define an \(N\)-complex at \(q\), generalizing the construction which for \(q= -1\) and \(N=2\) gives the usual associated complex. This \(N\)-complex has \(N-1\) sets of homology groups which can be described in terms of the appropriate homology groups of the associated complex, by a result of Dubois-Violette for which the author gives a new proof in this paper. If the simplicial module has a cyclic structure, in the usual sense of Connes, the author defines appropriate generalizations of the Tsygan bicomplex at an \(N\)th root of unity \(q\) (again, there are \(N-1\) of them), and uses it to calculate cyclic homology at \(q\), which turns out to be isomorphic to the usual cyclic homology of the cyclic simplicial module. Finally, the author uses the techniques developed to clarify the relation between two particular deformations of the homology at a root of unity of a simplicial module.
