For a wide class of Dirichlet series associated to automorphic forms, the authors show that those without Euler products must have zeros within the region of absolute convergence. For instance, for classical degree \(2\) \(L\)-functions, they prove the following theorem. { Theorem.} Let \(f\in S_k(\Gamma_1(N))\) be a holomorphic cuspform of arbitrary weight and level. If the associated complete \(L\)-function \(\Lambda_f(s)=\int_0^\infty f(iy)y^{s-1}\,dy\) does not vanish for \(\mathrm{Re}(s)>\frac{k+1}2\) then \(f\) is an eigenfunction of the Hecke operators \(T_p\) for all primes \(p\not | N\). The obtained results extend work of \textit{E. Saias} and \textit{A. Weingartner} [Acta Arith. 140, No. 4, 335--344 (2009; Zbl 1205.11101)], where a similar result is proved for degree 1 \(L\)-functions.
