The aim of this paper is to consider the Schottky problem, i.e., the problem of characterizing Jacobians of curves among principally polarized abelian varieties. The author considers the Schottky problem based on the algebraic and rigid analytic version of \textit{J. D. Fay}'s trisecant formula [Theta functions on Riemann surfaces. Berlin-Heidelberg-New York: Springer-Verlag (1973; Zbl 0281.30013)]. He studies this problem by giving the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) characterization of Jacobian varieties among abelian varieties in terms of their algebraic or nonarchimedean theta functions.
