Let \(P\) be a weak\(^*\)-continuous projection on a JBW\(^*\)-triple \(A\). The main goal of this paper is to study when the commutation of \(P\) with all inner derivations of \(P(A)\) is equivalent to \(P\) being contractive. The author gives a positive answer assuming certain additional conditions. More concretely, when \(B= P(A)\) is an atomic subtriple which coincides with a direct sum of finite-dimensional Cartan factors and \(P\) is the sum of coordinate projections with respect to a standard grid of \(B\), then \(P\) is contractive if and only if it commutes with all inner derivations of \(B\).
