For an ordinal \(\alpha\in [0,\omega_1)\), a map \(f:X\to Y\) between topological spaces is a right (left) B\(_\alpha\)-compositor for a class \(\mathcal{Z}\) of topological spaces if for any topological space \(Z\in\mathcal{Z}\) and a map \(g:Y\to Z\) (\(g:Z\to X\)) of the \(\alpha\)'th Baire class the composition \(g\circ f:X\to Z\) (\(f\circ g:Z\to Y\)) also belongs to the \(\alpha\)'th Baire class, respectively. In the present paper characterizations of B\(_\alpha\)-compositors are given. It is shown that under some restrictions on the domain and the range the property of being a right Baire-one-compositor is equivalent to many other properties of functions (such as piecewise continuity, \(G_\delta\)-measurability, B\(_1\)-stability), while left compositors are exactly continuous maps.
